Smokefree Spaces Toolkit
NHS Greater Manchester
Communications toolkit
Video showcasing the benefits of smokefree spaces with community spaces. Sophie filmed and edited the video.
Sophie was commissioned by NHS Greater Manchester to produce a communications toolkit supporting VCFSE organisations to create a voluntary, outdoor smokefree space.
The project was part of the Make Smoking History programme’s broader harm reduction approach to tobacco control, supporting a reduction in smoking prevalence through denormalising smoking within communities and protecting people from secondhand smoke.
Sophie worked with 8 organisations across Greater Manchester to co-create a toolkit. It involved:
Interviews with community organisations to understand challenges and smoking behaviours in each space.
Writing a behavioural science-informed communications toolkit, featuring content such as how-to guides, draft policies, communications templates, role-play examples and suggested scripts for conversations.
Testing the toolkit resources with each space.
Supporting implementation of the smokefree spaces using the toolkit over an 8-week period.
Undergoing feedback calls and site visits to capture staff, volunteer and visitor feedback.
Producing a range of case studies to support shared learning.
Creating communications to promote the toolkit and launch it publicly, including several videos.

“Sophie is a highly experienced and organised marketing and communications lead. Working with the Making Smoking History Team at NHS Greater Manchester, Sophie led the delivery of the What Will You Miss stop smoking campaign and associated community engagement activities.
During this time, I highly commend Sophie for her ability to pick up work quickly, deliver on time, problem-solve, and work across a complex system with multiple stakeholders.
In addition to the campaign execution and launch, Sophie also led on vital commissioning and procurement activities on behalf of the team and programme of work. This included contract and finance management for multiple third-party organisations.
I would thoroughly recommend Sophie as an experienced freelancer and also hope we can continue to work with her at NHS Greater Manchester in the future.”
